Synopsis (taken from Baka Tsuki):

A man who was once called the world’s strongest agent ended up becoming a teacher after his retirement, to train a new generation of agents. After many years of training his disciples, he was killed at the age of 60 by a secret organization’s ruse and was reincarnated in another world with his memories intact.

Though he was surprised by the existence of magic and the strange species in that world, he quickly adapted to his condition as a newborn and took advantage of it. He acquired special magic and gained a massive amount of strength thanks to his rigorous discipline, in order to reach his goal: Resume his career as a teacher which he left halfway through in his previous life.

This is the story of a man, who, based on the memories and the experiences of his previous life, became a teacher who travels through the world with his students.

****Notes & disclaimers:****

• These translation(s) are an alternative translation to those done by Defiring (who already has the first few volumes completed and will be translating at a much faster speed than I will be) and others.
• Once again, I am not trying to take over the series, but wish to provide an alternative translation for those interested.
  • These translations are a less-localized version.
    • SFX: currently a mix of changing some and leaving some as is (but converted to romaji).
    • Titles & honorifics: kept as is (onee-san, Sirius-sama, etc.).
    • Onomatopoeia: like the SFX, currently a mix.
    • Specialized terms: by default kept in Japanese but converted to romaji (always accompanied with an added translator’s note: TLN).
    • Ellipses: currently keeping the Japanese form instead of the correct English formatting (if you see the English ellipsis, then that’s something I added and not in the raw).
  • These translations prioritize ‘accuracy’ over English flow.
    • For those semi-fluent in Japanese in terms of listening,  I can liken it to watching an anime with subtitles that has simplified the sentences to the extent that a lot of the nuances are lost, even though they maintain the overall meaning of the original work.
    • For others, I’m not trying to translate the web novel word-for-word (although that’d be way faster), but I do attempt to make it flow in English.
    • As I’m still ‘relatively’ new to translating for an audience, I’m still trying to balance ‘accuracy’ over English flow. The current debate raging within me (and perhaps it’s a constant debate in the translator community) is to what extent a translator should prioritize making the translation flow in English (proper grammar, syntax, etc.) vs translating over as much of the subtle nuances as possible.The ideal would be to have both at the same time, impeccable English and extraordinary fidelity to the original work. As a translator, I prioritize the latter over the former. An editor is supposed to help me with the former when I need it right? (Leaving aside the fact that I need it more often than not…) **Anecdotal evidence warning→** From my own personal experience, I find that when I try and make it flow in ‘proper’ English, I lose some of the nuances of the raw. Then, when an editor comes in and improves upon the English, more nuances are lost. Of course, the interplay between translator and editor attempts to minimize this ‘lost in translation’ effect, but there’s only so much one can do.Sure, there are superstar translators who have impeccable English and can maintain a high-fidelity to the original work, but I’m not one of them. You might not have noticed from my translations (or from this page), but my English can be called ‘sub-par’.This brings me to why I’m doing an alternative translation. Basically, I feel that the existing translations (especially the earlier chapters) have lost ‘many’ of the subtleties of the original work, in the quest for impeccable English. Perhaps a majority of those subtleties are not important to convey the overall meaning that the author intended, but they themselves contain meaning that the author wished to convey nonetheless. While there are other reasons (like formatting and consistency), that is the main reason (perhaps I should provide some examples of what I mean? It might make this page too long though…).I try to use ‘proper’ English grammar, syntax, etc. to the best of my abilities. I constantly feel that it’s not up to scratch, and hence would love an editor (I’m so lazy, pushing it to an editor…). Most people know how difficult it is to edit/proofread you’re own work. It’s like pulling teeth, but I do occasionally change around the syntax of a sentence, even though at times I loathe to do so (don’t even get me started on run-on sentences…). Finally I want to make one thing clear, I’m not saying that the translations I’m providing are any better than other existing translations. I’m just providing an alternative translation that is essentially a different interpretation of the raw, in the sense that I place emphasis on maintaining certain subtleties or nuances where others may not feel that it’s necessary to do so. Take Defiring’s translations for example, he largely maintains the author’s overall meaning in his translations and they also read much better in English compared to my own translations. For people who cannot abide by sub-par English translations, that’s the place to go. I hope that perhaps for other people, who don’t mind my level of English, and prefer a less-localised version (especially people who already have some familiarity with the language and culture), enjoy (or bear with?) my alternative translations.
• I don’t currently have a translation checker or an editor, so these translations are more than likely to contain inaccuracies in translation and terribad Engrish (this is not a MTL though).
• As this is something done in my spare time, there is no schedule. I make zero promises, I may drop it at any time.
• I have added ()’s for continuous chapter numbering. Just +1 to the ()’s for equivalent Defiring chapter numbering. [Technically the raw is Chapter XX, Part YY – but for now I’ll keep it as Volume XX, Chapter YY.]
• I will also try to add translator’s notes (TLN’s) where I think further clarification may be needed.
