So recently, I have learned a new word that I didn’t know before, “spoofing.” The term appears to mean “hoax or trick someone,” according to google. It seems that the recent post asking me to change the characters’ names in Eliza’s story was spoofing, although I have since gotten in contact with the real author. Why do people do things like that? With the hours I spent changing the names in every chapter’s page, I could have translated 2 chapters instead, and now I have to change all the names back again, which will take me several hours to do yet again as I have to do it for each chapter as they are individual pages on the site, even with find and replace. This really makes me unmotivated to do translations. Any thoughts on this matter?
There’s just mean people like this on the Internet. You might also know (if not, here it is) the term “griefing”. I guess it’s the Internet equivalent of ringing doors and running, or making prank calls.
Take heart in that there are plenty of us who are very thankful for your work. Please don’t let it get to you.

Assholes will be assholes, just don’t let it get to you man ❤
Also, if you don't feel like re-changing all the names all over again just yet, take it easy. I'm pretty sure most people will understand, just switch to the new names from now on.
Cheers, and thanks for all the translations !

Due to the anonymity of the internet and a lack of repercussions for reprehensible behavior, these kinds of things are quite commonplace and why online gaming has so many bad communities. It’s juvenile trolling that someone immature thinks is funny. It’s actually not very difficult to spoof or mask/disguise your IP address, e-mail address etc. While there are a lot of good people in the world, humans are inherently bad. Because the internet is worldwide, you have to deal with people trolling from a very large population (anyone with internet access).
Nothing can really be done about it other than being aware of it and knowing what to do when it happens or you suspect it’s happening. Not an answer with any kind of solution, but that’s sadly just how things are.

That’s exactly what I thought, though not as eloquently. Good stuff.

First, thanks for the translations. About changing names, what kind of editor are you using? The WordPress editor? You can Ctrl+C/copy the text from the wordpress editor, Ctrl+V/paste it in a text editor like notepad (or Notepad+), do a “find and replace”, then do again the copy+paste.

THe only way to do it relatively painlessly is a big document, not intend to separate into html. Once you got multiple pages on hand, it’s a big pain no matter how you cut it.

I know this is very late, but Notepad++ allows you to find and replace across many documents at the same time.

Ask someone else to do it for you? or just forget about it. Most people don’t really care

BTW, never heard about this “spoofing” thing. I know that it’s impossible to do a translation 100% faithful to the original. You have to adapt and make it so we ignoramus can understand. You can put a lot of explaining inside the translated text, or you can adapt the content, using some kind of equivalence.

Bit of a necro..
I usually hear the word “spoofing” in the context of ECM, where you “spoof” missiles or radar systems.

Well the internet has lots of people like that. I’m glad I get to read your translations once in a while though, it’s something I enjoy a lot.

Thoughts.. I’ve got the feathers if someone else can bring the tar we can go do an old fashioned lynching on this “spoofer” for wasting your time and delaying all the chapters we could have had translated.
But seriously, kudos to you for not ranting in a rage. Tricking me like that would have me so mad… that breath heaving.. flames at the side of my face… LOL

IP spoofing makes it hard to do that.

Sorry to hear. There are a lot of idiots that enjoy causing trouble for others. If there’s a way to block that guy I totally would.

The only times I’ve seen the word “spoofing” used it has either been defined as someone impersonating someone else or in the case of a film it would be a type of comedy. As CesarAKG suggested, find and replace is your friend. I looks like WordPress also has a revision tool, so you should be able to revert it easily. https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/page-revisions/
Thanks for all the translations! We really appreciate it.

Oh dear. Does that also mean that there is no ‘official’ translation coming out? Wouldn’t that also be a major attack on the author? I’m so sorry to hear about your wasted time. I hope something good happens to you to make up for it! Many thanks for everything you do~.

I believe your situation here is trolling over spoofing. Grieving is also a likely one. Trolling is like teasing, but can go real bad, grieving is more to make people feel bad, spoofing is more to faking one’s identity, in terms of the person himself, like someone faking as the author himself.
That aside, I can’t really say that I understand your feelings as I am still a nameless translator with only a few chapters up, but I think rather than people like them, you should continue for the sake of your loyal followers 😀

The troll used spoofing (whether e-mail or IP isn’t clear from the post, but I tend to believe it’s the former) to impersonate the original author and conduct their trolling/griefing.

oh okay i see then in that case it is spoofing, or inpersonate. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

No problem, I was just clarifying.

If the author says white is black, just name black white and turn a deaf ear to any complain, thats what I would do. In any case you are the only one with power to decide, so do whatever you feel like 😉 . There will always be some barking dogs on the other side of the street, and no matter how many bones you throw they won´t stop barking, so why should we care? XD
Thanks for your hard work!

Thank you so much for translating! Anyway, there are really bad people around here. They’re just jealous that you know two languages and is able to translate stuff. 😡 For you problems about the names, how about you create a list of the fake names with the real names along side them and an explanation as to why it’s like that. I remember when I was reading a manga called Midnight Secretary, the translators keep on using “Satozuki” for the protagonist’s name, but her real name is “Satozuka.” What they did is informed the readers about this problem, give the real name, and say that they’ll use the real name onwards. You can do that, too, so you won’t trouble yourself changing everything. Good luck!

Well.. The only ones who does this s— were dogs with no fangs.. and those brainless fools who thinks that they’re so smart for being too.. too stupid for harassing and delaying the translators. Haaah. Well dont worry.. They’ve already sowed their karma upon hundreds.. no, thousands of readers and translators.. Let’s just wait for something to reap their karma .. Hohohoho.

this is technically a less serious version of identity fraud, and is done purely because the person is egotistical enough to put personal pleasure, or profit ahead of basic human decency.
condolences about having to deal with that garbage.

The thing I’m most worried about is what you admitted to in your post. Losing motivation. It’s considerably easier to focus on and remember the bad things that happen rather than the good but, I hope that, every time you feel your motivation waning, you come back and look at all the comments from people who enjoy and appreciate your effort.

sorry you had to go through all that just because an imbecile doesn’t appreciate the work you put in and thought it’ll be fun to troll someone. I just want to let you know that there are many fans out there who really appreciate the work that you and many other translators put in in order to allow novel ideas to proliferate across cultures.
Thank you very much and sorry on behalf of the idiot who made the troll comment.
Your fans,
🙂

It’s internet unfortunately, it’s hard to punish these types of people. Even so I appreciate your work and many others as well so don’t lose heart. These types of people are a minority but they often leave a bigger impact than majority.
On the other hand, it means your work is gaining some fame in the internet so congrats.

I know it is a late comment, but this might be a tip for the next time. In Windows in the normal screen you have a function ab->ba that will change one word in the correct wordt throughout the document. With ctrl+c, ctrl+v, I think it might form a solution for the next time people try to troll a super awesum person, who only deserve respect and admiration.
