Eliza chapter 190 – Interrogation time and murky eyes

While taking Mefuri who seemed to have gotten more obedient along with us, for the time being I decided to place the rest of the escaped slave children soldiers into the barracks.

The barracks at Fort Jugfena also has a room that can serve as an interrogation room. As the leader of the Kaldia army, I was informed beforehand on how to unlock it. In order to prevent its misuse, a simple but special method must be used to unlock the door, one that would be difficult for outsiders to figure out.

My Kaldia army soldiers were awaiting orders in the dining hall. Since they were all gathered here, it meant that Ratoka must have done as I instructed and summoned them together, but Ratoka didn’t seem to be here for some reason.

“My lord!”

“I’ve returned, report the situation to me… Gunther’s not here?”

When I looked around, not only was Ratoka missing, Gunther was absent as well. Was he off together with Ratoka somewhere?

“My lord, you’re injured? Come, let’s get that treated right away.”

“More importantly than that, Claudia’s injuries are worse than mine.”

“She got injured! What, it couldn’t be!”

“Claudia-sama was seriously injured…!?”

“So this wasn’t the blood from the enemy!!?”

The soldiers were in a ruckus at seeing the state Claudia was in. I simply received a towel and began wiping the vomit and blood off of my body, but they made a simple makeshift bed for Claudia to rest on and placed her on it respectfully.

When the blood covering Claudia was wiped away as well, I discovered that Claudia was in a worse condition than I thought. …The skin on her fingers and wrists had been burnt by explosions. Her beautiful blonde hair was also singed in many places.

Well, at least hair will grow back… The skin on her fingers and wrists, that could be much worse…

As I bit down on my lips, perhaps Mefuri who was behind us felt a disturbance in the air, her shoulders started trembling. Although she was still tied up, blindfolded, and gagged, she seemed sensitive to the people nearby her. I don’t know if it’s part of her magical powers, though.

“House the captured child prisoners under our protection in three separate rooms. Claudia, please choose a unit for me to do this task.”

“…Then, the third unit.”

The army unit that Claudia designated split itself into three smaller teams, and took the remaining children to the three rooms picked for their temporary accommodation.

“My lord, what about that girl?”

“…She’s under my personal jurisdiction.”

Mefuri seemed anxious as the soldiers glanced at her. It seemed that she was still able to detect their gazes upon her, she was rather restless and unsettled.

“Mefuri, this way.”

When I called her, she hesitantly and obediently walked in my direction. With her senses taken away from her, human nature would be that she was frightened of moving, it should be a stressful situation for her. Well, that was part of the reason why I had Mefuri blindfolded.

“I’m going to ask you some yes or no questions. Nod for yes and shake your head for no.”

Mefuri nodded her head slightly. Being surrounded by soldiers seems to have heightened her feeling of tension.

“Firstly, about your magic ability. You have the power to explode things, correct?”

She nodded. The soldiers were in a momentary uproar at hearing this, and they all went on guard against Mefuri. Her shoulders were trembling as if she was frightened.

“Are humans the only thing that you can explode? – No? Then, humans and magical beasts? -Oh, still wrong?”

Mefuri’s ability seemed to have wider applications than I realized.

“Then, animals as well – what, it even includes plants?”

She nodded in confirmation at those.

She could even explode plants… The more I found out about her ability, the scarier it sounded, I was shivering as well.

“So you can even explode plants… So I suppose you could even explode dead leaves, then?”

That was just an expression of my admiration for the extent of her power, but it seemed that Mefuri interpreted it as another question. She seemed confused at how to respond, then shook her head.

…What part of that was she saying no to? …She was unable to explode dead leaves? She was just exploding corpses and body parts earlier. What exactly was her power…

“Is it that you can only explode living things, then?”

She nodded affirmatively. I see.

-After that, I kept asking Mefuri many questions and got a clear grasp on Mefuri’s ability by the time that the first aid treatment for Claudia was over.

It seemed that the weakness of her ability was the condition to become something she could explode. To be able to explode something, she had to be touching it beforehand continuously for about half a day. Not only that, she could only do it to one living thing at a time, she couldn’t prepare two living things as bombs simultaneously. Among the remaining captured children, it seemed that there were only three left that could be exploded by her. Apparently, she turned them into her bombs without arousing suspicion by holding hands while sleeping with them.

The explosion’s power would depend on the type and mass of what was used, Mefuri herself was unable to control the power. However, she had a sense for how strong the explosion would be.

And, the greatest limit to her power was the detonation distance. In order to explode her bombs, the bomb must be able to hear Mefuri’s voice, and Mefuri must give a verbal command personally. Meaning, no matter how close Mefuri’s bombs were to her, if something loud drowned out her voice or if there was a soundproof wall between them, she wouldn’t be able to explode her living bombs.

Even after exploding a living bomb, she could still explode the corpse’s body parts again, but that was limited by the fact that the explosions would be much smaller and Mefuri had to be within the body’s range.

She also had the ability to sense the locations of her bombs that were close to her, as well as being able to sense the maximum range that she could detonate her bombs at, it’s unmistakable that her ability was powerful despite its limitations.

“…Got it. Then, I shall have your bindings and blindfold removed. The gag shall remain, you should have no objections, right?”

Mefuri nodded affirmatively.

I drew my short sword so that I could kill Mefuri at a moment’s notice if need be, as I indicated to the soldier standing behind Mefuri to remove her blindfold first.

…But, hmm. Was this “good” enough already?

As the blindfold was removed, her cloudy, muddy, murky eyes that seemed like they were dreaming were revealed – I confidently looked down on her with my own eyes that were as cold as ice.

  1. Are you sure your eyes is that cold, Eliza?
    I have a feeling after this Mefuri would worship the ground Eliza walks on…

    And LOL at Kaldia’s army reaction to Claudia’s wound.
    “She got injured! What, it couldn’t be!”

    “Claudia-sama was seriously injured…!?”

    “So this wasn’t the blood from the enemy!!?”

    XDDD Claudia oh Claudia…. it seems your comrades think you’re made of steel or something! When you’re bloody they assume you’re soaked in blood of enemy rather than yours.

  2. While I’m fully expecting Mefuri to become Eliza’s pawn, either as a disposable weapon against the enemy or actually seriously taking her to her own side, it still wouldn’t surprise me if Eliza outright executed her, as a sort of trope subversion.

    • Both are quality valid. It would be pretty common sense to kill the bitch who can blow up anyone if they accidentally touch her to long (does it have to be all at once?). Plus it may or may not get bonus points with the other slaves killing her. But on the same note she is just a child and Eliza could complete mind shatter her and turn her into a hyper obedient slave that wouldn’t even dare question her. Her strategic value is massive, not counting the sheer terror tactics that she could pull off (SON! You’re ali-BOOM). Plus all the stuff she knows about the magic people.

      Either option would make sense.

  5. Thanks for the chapter~ :3
    Scary. Her magic is scary. Being able to even explode plants and animals, well, at least Eliza don’t need to prepare human sacrifices if she wants to use Mefuri. I think you missed some question that might be useful later, Eliza, like how many ‘magic’ users are with Rindarl. With this, Eliza got a new weapon!
    Everyone would be surprised if the usually invincible shounen protagonist can actually get wounded, lol. I wonder where these two people went?

  6. Those limitations are quite interesting. In short, it’s not usable during a battle, since prolonged contact is necessary. But it could still be useful for sneak-attacks and for scaring the enemies. Especially, if Eliza needs another scary showing of killing prisoners, she can just have some explode in front of the rest. Still, Mefuri would have to touch that person for half a day, so it’s still pretty inconvenient.

    I wonder how many more magic users are out there? The enemy really goofed up by not making better use of Mefuri.

    • Wait, do they have elephants and whales in this world? Or, some other really big magic creatures? Those would make some Really big bombs. xD

    • How do you figure it’s not usable in battle? We can’t make modern explosives in the middle of a firefight, but we sure as hell use them anyway. It’s a simple matter of having her regularly manufacture explosive objects and then deploying the stockpile when necessary.

      • According to list of limitation, the living bomb she marked won’t work if she didn’t touch it continuously for half a day AND she had to be the one detonating it from distance CLOSE enough for her voice to do so. It’s triggered by voice so imagine how effective this could be in noisy battlefield? Unlikely…

        I suppose it can be used in sneak attack like in last chapter, done very clumsily and rely on psychological tactic than effectiveness. Not only her bomb was such a heavy baggage *being a group of kids* they’re in no way sneaky.
        Maybe she should just make rat bombs in large numbers and used them to bomb enemies.
        However the procedure of making the living bombs is just so time consuming.

      • Actually that is terrifying. Eliza captures some important strategy dude. Has girl hold hands with him throughout the interrogations as a “lie detector”. Eventually ransom him back. He ends up back on the battlefield. Make a primitive Megaphone for girly. Strategist / commander goes boom mid battle.

        That’s assuming she doesn’t just break her mind and then throw her away.

      • Certainly, but she’d have to sit in a forest for several days. She’d basically have to hug eacch tree for half a day at a time. No matter how well a person is brainwashed, she’d probably get sick of such assignments after a while.

        In fact, I thought she could booby-trap the area around say Eliza’s residence to create a security zone, but if anybody shows up, she needs to be aware of it, and be within distance of screaming at stuff to explode. It’s just more inconvenient than normal booby traps. Also, Mefuri was quite dangerous here because the undergrounds are a narrow, confined space, but she’d be a sitting duck in an open area, and her targets too dispersed to really cause more damage than a few soldiers would.

        However, if she can use her ability on bigger animals like elephants or whales (i.e. much bigger explosions), they could lead those to destroy big targets like ports or city walls. In this case, the half-day preparation (per target) would be quite worthwhile.

    • She could keep preparing a stock of bombs during peace time, and then blow everything up with carefully timed attacks.
      Perhaps hold two seeds every day, then plant them and explode the resulting plant for maximum effect.

  7. Did Eliza just secure the means to catapult her own forces’ firearms development forward?

    Have Mefuri prime plants, then grind them up for “gunpowder.” The only downsides would be it could not be widespread, and Mefuri would need to be present in the artillery squad to command the cannons to fire.

    It still might be enough for the minds of the her country to figure out the workings from her examples though.

  8. Now the really important questions:
    – did someone gave her that power or does she have it since bird?
    – do all her tribe members have a special magic?

  9. I originally wanted for her to become a possible ally or pawn for Eliza, but she primes an innocent kid into becoming her bomb by sidling up to them and completely deceiving them? That kid can just go die. Thanks for the chapter!

  10. Since she can blow up small parts of her bombs after these detonate, shouldn’t be able to turn a tree into a bomb then turn it into small tin boards, place them on the ground in a line that branch itself off, cover then on dirt and create a minefield?
    That way she is away from the noise of the battlefield but close the the bomb.
    Something like this: ============
    ============
    Mafuri========= Enemy
    ============
    ============
    It could be a perfect trap in my opinion.

    Sorry for my bad english.

    So, they had to he living for her to turn them into bombs, but she can blow them up even after they died?

  12. I’ve also considered the option of Mefuri becoming a pawn or even a loyal servant in time, but I’m uncertain about Eliza’s thoughts on the matter. Personally, I’m hoping that she kills the child- after all, even after being brainwashed, Mefuri’s actions still killed so many of her own allies, and I’m not certain if Eliza wants someone like that close to her.

    On another note, the author apparently released an “IF” alternate short story on her twitter. That was rather depressing than what I was hoping for…

  13. She will be useful. Keep her as a tool, but trust her not at all, and until she earns the privilege of once again being treated as a human… treat her as a wild beast, dangerous and quite capable of harm.

    Thanks for the chapter!

  14. bomb girl really got the short end of the superpower stick. A half-day of channeling? Direct physical contact? Only detonates in response to an audible verbal command? That’s a lot of requirements compared to the last “magic” user who only had to wave her arms, point at things, and put on a light show with runes conjured from the aether.
