Eliza chapter 204 – The long, long prequel’s conclusion

Finally, winter came before long.

After the final winter semester exams, there was winter vacation, and all the students typically either returned to their residences in the royal capital or back to their parents’ domains.

Before any of my classmates could see my returned test results with the teacher’s comments that I had received the highest marks in the entire grade, I hurriedly destroyed all my test papers. While waiting for my horse-drawn carriage’s arrival to come pick me up, Zephyr and I chatted a little  in my free time.

“You’re going to be returning to the Kaldia domain?”

“Yeah. I still have lots of work to do as the domain lord. If it wasn’t for that, I wouldn’t want to return.”

“Surely you must be joking. You’re always so serious, Kaldia, that the truth must be you really want to return to clear up all the accumulated work.”

Zephyr chuckled at his own joke, while I merely shrugged as my lips relaxed.

To tell the truth, I actually didn’t have too much work piled up, as I took care of it already while I was recovering from my earlier injuries. Even though I hadn’t been in Kaldia for most of the past year, letting work pile up was something that I absolutely wouldn’t allow. I would always take care of it even at school, so it couldn’t pile up.

Zephyr seemed to understand this as well, so it was probably just a casual joke by him.

“How about you, Zephyr? Are you going to stay in the royal capital?”

“I’m also going to return to the Molton domain this winter. The journey is so long that it’s rather bothersome, but my younger brother Lucius is waiting there for me. Also… when Lucius becomes a student at noble school next year, I think I’ll have less chances to go back to my home.”

There’s still two more years left before we graduate. Perhaps Zephyr was planning on not seeing his homeland for the following two years, as there was now a wistful nostalgic expression in his eyes.

“…The Molton domain is really beautiful. The white Amon Albus mountains are near, so the rocks are also white, plus there’s a colorful variety of wildflowers. I would love for you to visit me, and although it’s annoying for me to admit it, visit my father as well as you’re one of his best friends. It’s really far from the royal capital though, so I suppose it would be difficult for you to accept? Even if I don’t go back for two years after this, I’d still like to show you around there sometime after we graduate from noble school.”

I smiled as widely as I could while listening to Zephyr.

“The war is finally over. In two years, I think my domain will mostly have recovered fully. That’s why I think it would actually be nice to take a nice relaxing vacation somewhere at that time. The first place I’d want to visit… I think a close friend’s domain sounds like a great idea.”

“Wonderful! That sounds like the best vacation plan ever! Will you take me along with you?”

“…I don’t mind, but how many months do you intend to spend on the trips between the Molton and Kaldia domains, then?”

Zephyr seemed shocked at my comeback and fell silent for a moment. Then, we broke out into laughter almost simultaneously.

The other students around us that kept a good distance from me all seemed to glance at us with annoyed expressions, but I paid them no mind and continued laughing together with Zephyr.

Even now, I can barely believe that I’m able to enjoy myself like this, laughing at a joke and having fun together with a classmate of mine. I never even considered the possibility when I first walked through the school gate here for the first time.

The number of people I could relax myself around were so limited in number. Apart from Zephyr, there were only Ratoka, who knew almost all of my secrets, and Tira, Reka, and Athrun from the Shiru tribe, the children I lived together with in my childhood.

Despite the fact that we were both nobles, Zephyr seemed to have become someone I could relax and have fun with just like Ratoka and the others even though I’ve barely known him for that long compared to the rest. How inconceivable.

…As expected, was it because Zephyr’s way of talking and joking seemed so similar to his?

Even though I could no longer remember his voice clearly, it seemed that bits and pieces of him still remained piled up in the bottom of my heart.

It was almost time for the heaviest snowfall of the year in the Jugfena region when Arxia’s peace ambassador to Rindarl finally returned.

With the peace treaty finally having been completed and signed, the royal capital was incredibly lively this year even though winter was usually its quietest season.

Despite the fact that the royal army’s victorious return had already caused a huge commotion, there was actually a second round of invitations sent out for yet another victory celebration. I could only smile blankly at this in amazement.

Arxia had set out many conditions for Rindarl to follow in order to achieve peace.

Slavery was banned. Rindarl receiving immigrants from the southern countries was banned. An upper limit was set for Rindarl’s military expenditures. Furthermore, a tariff was established for Rindarl to trade with the southern countries. A large amount of compensation money was paid to Arxia by the Rindarl Union’s ambassador to Arxia. Apart from these, there were also countless other conditions that we obtained.

Apparently in Arxia’s “Royal Palace,” the new prevailing way of thinking was that now with a country like the Rindarl Union that was as large and powerful as Arxia existing, having a non-interference policy was no longer feasible for Arxia. Even with conservative voices in the House of Lords strongly against the changes to Arxia’s isolationist policy, Arxia still pressed through successfully with these demanding peace conditions that were basically akin to pushing down someone’s head against the ground.

In the long history of Arxia, this was the first time that we had ever “controlled” what was considered a heretic society.

Only a single Rindarl citizen came to Arxia together with our peace ambassador. This was information that probably even Earl Terejia didn’t know yet.

Another one of the peace conditions had been for Rindarl to send a royal hostage to Arxia. The name of the girl chosen for this purpose was Emilia Yuriel De La Rindarl.

She was both the princess of the former Rindarl Kingdom, and the daughter of the current Rindarl Union’s Archduke. She was the only daughter of the Archduke from the former Rindarl Kingdom that had been set up as the puppet government leader for the four united Dukedoms-

– And she was also the heroine of a certain otome game in my memory, who potentially was a person that could wildly influence my fate, and cause my life to completely go off its tracks.

Conclusion of Act 3.

  1. “…As expected, was it because Zephyr’s way of talking and joking seemed so similar to his?” this part. She’s talking about him, right? I’ve forgotten his name but my heart still hurts. Sobs.

And now… The drama shall come like a storm. Best of luck Eliza!

Really? I still haven’t gotten over Kamil’s death! Why do you do this to me author!?

This next arc will be interesting for sure. Especially since Eliza ended up entrenching herself into the crown prince’s faction.

  3. Thanks 4 the chapter!

Don’t think that the story will have that many similarities with the game, since she not only changed her earlier life, but others too.

  4. She Destroyed her exam papers? xD Well, I guess that’s one way to keep the desk clean. I guess if anybody asks her, she can now tell them ‘my dog ate my test papers.’

Eliza, if you’re always working on domain lord work even at school, do you really think anybody would believe it if you told them you were not a workaholic? But well, good going Zephyr, you secured a promise to bring back Eliza to meet the parents. I wonder if the others that seem annoyed are actually envious and jealous of Zephyr for being so close to Eliza? xD

The heroine is finally making an entrance! I wonder if she’s a reincarnator, or a magic user, or some fruit or the likes. In the original game, she came to find a husband. Since she was sent over as a hostage, then this marriage condition was likely either a demand from her own country, to have a footing in Arxia, or from Arxia, to control Rindarl. The fact that the Archduke is a puppet government makes it even more possible for Arxia to control Rindarl through said puppet government. I’m rather surprised by the change in political mood by the way. It makes sense, but this also implies that Arxia is more ruthless, hence it Might mean that a large number of higher-ranks may not disapprove of Eliza’s own actions.

Gotta feel bad for the original Rindarl kingdom. It was in danger of being swallowed up by the four dukedoms to start with, and like we suspected it became a puppet government because the four dukedoms were too equal in power, and as a result its own royalty became scapegoats to send over a hostage. Does said Archduke have sons, or does it only have this one daughter?

The war is over, but there’s still that shady sect, plus there’s lots of potential politics now. Can’t wait for the next arc.

  5. GDI. This author does not want us to forget about Kamil. All’s good (for now), but it hurts so much ;; 7 ;; )). BUT can we just applaud Zephyr for taking the initiative to lure Eliza to his home and parents xD. Thanks for the chapter! Let the story begin!

    • It was mentioned before that the original villainess made fun of the heroine for coming from a defeated country, so it makes sense now: the heroine was nothing but a hostage, even a viscount’s daughter could pick on her. The heroine was probably instructed by either her side or Arxia or both to get married here as a political move.

  6. GOSH, I feel like the “heroine” is not nice. I don’t know but I feel like she has a secret mission of some sort. Like to infiltrate and destroy Arxia inside and Goddess Eliza should be the one to save the day! And to capture the hearts of the damsels-in-distress (ehem princes, earl, archduke, etc.).

    THANK YOU FOR THE CHAPTER!

  7. Methinks such harsh punitive measures are a detriment to Arxia in the long run. Sure, profit off their backs hand over fist , but five, ten, or twenty years down the line they’ll be at your throats again with their grudges nursed all the while. Lend a hand and support each other through trade and they’ll be much more likely to bury the hatchet.

    • Just enough time for Eliza to show her daughter how mama gets shit done.

Then she does her first mass execution (crucifixion while they are on fire) and everyone’s proud.

    • You think like a norma “rational” person (it is not a insult only highlight) BUT you forget that both countries are religious countries only small step from being fanatics (some sect in Rindarl ARE fanatics and some in Arxia too). Both countries treat each other as heretics ( I think it is wrong word to use here as heretic is someone who betrays doctrine of given religion and is in other sect with some doctrine diffirent than orginal sect and that is what they call each other orginal and new sect. It would be better to use “dissenter” or “infidel” as Arxia and Rindarl have two completely diffirent religion) so all reason Able arguments go to bite the dust and religious thinking take precedence. In our world good example is Israel Palestynian conflict.

      • I didn’t forget, it’s simply my position on how the long game should be played from the perspective of Machiavellian Realpolitik… well, under the assumption you intend to avoid war and enrich your country.

If your plan in the long term is to expand, you were always going to have a war; though the caveat remains that being too brutal will make assimilation harder post-conquest.

  8. Well. Fuck.

Still, while this does hint at things somehow ending up along the same path as the original story… I think the heroine being taken in as a “hostage” may actually become a way in for Eliza.

There’s bound to be a lot of resentment towards her from the heroine, but it also means that resentment isn’t unfounded or hard to understand for Eliza. So unless the heroine ends up being totally evil, (and/)or a reincarnated person as well, she’ll be a lot more predictable and Eliza will have more ways to work around her.

Then again, it also makes all the other noble kids at the school turning against Eliza even more severely a possibility. Given that they’ve been removed from conflict for most of their lives, they could start to feel pity for the heroine while disregarding the whole reason she’s a hostage in the first place. (Which… would probably come as a surprise to (or at least grate) Eliza, since she’s very much taken to the “proper” and political noble stance.)

      • I’m not really talking about the influential people who already know her, though. More like a resurgence of the hatred towards her, like what lead to them abusing Reka (her retainer).

So while the sensible nobles who participated in the war would know (or reasonably be convinced) of her character, the others (and especially the ones who didn’t like her getting achievements in the first place) could make for a real schism… and ever more problems for Eliza.

      • (Seems this is as far down as these comments will reply chain will go. Shame, getting squished to the point where there’s one letter every line is kinda fun.)

I wasn’t saying it would be the smart thing to do, or even that it would last very long. Just that dumb kids will be dumb kids, couple that with existing reasons to dislike her, and a new stream of bad rumours about her… things could get messy for her (again…) pretty quickly.

And even outside of those kids, there are still bound to be plenty of nobles who hate her. There’s a good reason she’s afraid of getting any more rewards, after all.

That said, and as was my original comment, I also see hope for a solution that favours Eliza more. The current situation could play to her strengths incredibly well: If the heroine is genuinely vulnerable (and this could extend to a reincarnated person), that gives her an in to “brainwash” her. If the heroine openly resents her, that’s something she can understand and manoeuvre around.

    • Before Eliza left, she said that ‘her’ faction was the majority and bullied Eric’s faction. That’s despite the fact that she was quite notorious already. Now Eric is on her side, so is Sieghart, the old Marquis of North is dead and the now Marquis Einsbark, a strong backer of Eliza, took over, and even the Crown Prince is trying to get closer to her. With the war likely over and Eliza being attributed with taking down Densel’s capital and all its ships, Eliza is very likely considered a national hero at this point. And she’s #1 in her grade. Even if some Northern nobles hate her, it is doubtful anyone can easily sway the majority opinion against her.

The heroine, on the contrary, is a hostage from a country that attacked first.

If the heroine ever does manage to turn the whole school against Eliza, you can bet it’d be an upscale battle. At this point it’s more likely for her to be bullied to death without Eliza even lifting a finger.

      • That’s… yeah, turns out I was a bit hazy on just how the faction politics had turned out in the end.

Which, if anything, could point in the direction of things turning out as they had in the story (albeit through different means) regardless. With Eliza bullying the heroine, even if she absolutely doesn’t intend to now.

That said, I don’t think she’ll be considered a national hero at this point. We’ve seen how the soldiers reacted to her, we saw how the other kids pretty much bought into her reputation (meant to terrify the enemy), one that’s only gotten worse at this point. Not to mention she actually avoided any and all commendations at this time, leaving only the bad stuff for those not in the know (or wanting to undermine her).

      • Eliza interprets the kids’ actions as being afraid of her, but that’s her own interpretation. She had the same interpretation when she entered school, but the conversation with the first prince revealed that she was considered an ‘excellent lady’ who has ‘everyone’s attention’. Also, during Margrave Molton’s party, all the girls wanted to dance with her. Now look at how friendly Eric has become, and how the Crown Prince is trying to get closer to her. If the kids fear her, it probably isn’t because of her cruelty (compared to the time before she came to school, she actually didn’t do anything that excessive in the war this time), but because her accomplishments are too amazing.

The heroine could very well find herself bullied, but that would be because everyone is on Eliza’s side, not because Eliza wants to do anything. With 2 out of 4 capture targets on great terms with Eliza, it also won’t be easy for the heroine to find protection. As I said, she has an uphill battle. She’ll have to do something really amazing to get everyone on her side. I’m quite curious about it myself.

  9. Emilia Yuriel De La Rindarl, chosen as hostage of her country went to went to Arxia. There, even though the treatment wasn’t as bad as she thought, the gazes that laid on her were awful nor did she have any freedom.

As soon as the winter vacation of the noble school ended and new school year began, she was sent there to interact with the young nobles of the new generation. There at the noble school she will have the opportunity to learn more about Arxia’s customs and interact with all kinds of noble, such as the crown prince… and…. ‘that person’.

Arriving at the noble school, Emilia was fascinated by the sight of so many young nobles in one place when there’s no party. Truly a school were nobles socialize.

However while she is standing fascinated by the sight she feels those gazes again, those mocking, ridiculing eyes. Emilia’s full smile instantly becomes a small forced one. Lowering her head she starts to walk to the school building, but hearing whispers of onlookers her paces hastens and accidentally crushes at a person’s hard back.

Apologizing and looking up, the first thing she sees is a military uniform, which by the school’s regulation can only be used by titled nobles, looking further up she sees a handsome short haired youngster with a pair of cold blood…. red eyes….! At that moment fear strikes Emilia, the thoughts of she being killed right there were overflowing her mind. It was the terrible blood sucking monster, the nightmare of her country, Earl Kaldia. She was going to die for sure for having bumped on their back, ….. that is what she and all that saw the scene thought, but reality was largely different…. the Earl only glanced at her with their cold eyes and did a simply acknowledging sound, turned around and kept going to school.

Emilia thought her heart would stop as she glanced at the disappearing silhouette. Hearing the talk of nearby students, she perceived that it isn’t just her people that fear Earl Kaldia but also the people of this foreign land.

Arriving at class, there it was, Earl Kaldia sit on the back! Such bad luck! Emilia wanted to be farther from they, but if she sits on the front or middle there will be too many people looking at her, but at back…… only the seats next to Earl Kaldia is free…… with no other choice she decides to seat at the most farthest seat of the row line that the Earl was seated, that way people wouldn’t look at her nor would the earl look at her back, being looked at the side profile is better than back.

  11. Eh, so they have an important hostage from an enemy country, and possibly a spy…
And instead of confining her in the royal castle in a golden cage, they send her to school with all the nobles children (and the fucking crown prince) where she can make herself a network of connections, search for weaknesses, create a faction, etc…

This is the most retarded political move in this otherwise relatively realistic novel, so I hope the author give us a good reason and that even with then she will be heavily supervised.

  12. I don’t know why Eliza is refusing upgrading her noble title she already garnered a lot of enmity but she on the other hand has a lot of connections and they won’t suffer from her advancements. In noble society which is veeery hierarchical being closer to the top is better than being lower as those above can mess with those below but it is harder to do vice versa. This is one of the moment that Eliza is behaving too overly humble like typical japanese MC pity that
